Disappointed?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2005 (3 years, 11 months ago)

Yeah, in an earlier post, I told you that I would be posting the MP3s for the singles off of tonedeff’s upcoming album by the 24th of January. I was waiting on tonedeff to upload those MP3s and he’s busy with a lot of stuff and I didn’t want to release it before he announced it to his other fans.

No more delays, here are the links to the singles off of tonedeff’s upcoming album, Archetype:

If you want to buy the 12″ record (it has the street/dirty version, clean version, and instrumental of both songs– and some cool cover art: Politics, Disappointed), check out this page for a list of online and offline stores to order from. If you can’t play records, the CD-R will be available from tonedeff’s website when it relaunches.

Get ready for his album, Archetype. It’s coming out sometime in 2005.

Yodel!

For all those who don’t listen to tasteless parodies…

I dread having to write about things that are asian related. I always feel the need to drop my “I’m not the type of asian you may have seen in the movies or on television” disclaimer along with my “I’ve never even cooked rice” clause. But sometimes it’s worth doing it.

Any news I have to report is well summed up here:

New York hip-hop radio station Hot 97 is in hot water after broadcasting a parody song that mocked Asian tsunami victims, calling them “screaming chinks,” “drowning Africans,” and “bitches,” among other things.

To the tune of “We are the world,” the song contains crude and heartless lyrics such as, “All at once, you could hear the screaming chinks, and no one was safe from the wave/there were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away/you could hear God laugh, ‘Swim you bitches swim’”.

After being bombarded with phone calls and e-mails by enraged listeners, the station issued an official statement apologizing to “anyone who was offended,” adding that “Miss Jones In the Morning”—the show on which the song was aired—would contribute a mere one weeks pay to Tsunami Relief efforts.

MVRemix supports a full Hot 97 boycott, as racism is intolerable at any level, not to mention airing a racist parody song that ridicules the deaths of over 150,000 people in what is one of the greatest natural disasters we will see in our lifetimes.

In addition to being played on the radio, the song was also available for download on their web site under the heading “FUNNY SH*T” until irate listeners called and wrote in to complain.

Hot 97 Program Director may be reached through e-mail at jdimick@hot97.emmis.com or by phone at (212) 229-9797. Ask for Programming.

I have a pretty pessimistic outlook on what sort of things these online petitions can accomplish, but I don’t think it hurts to add your name to the cause. And it’s not a bad way to be a part of the cause without stooping to their level. Of course, for those that do want to stoop to their level (I try to cater to all audiences), a short song about Miss Jones’ beloved mother dying of cancer would pluck at the right emotional strings.

Update (Jan 26th, 3:44AM): Not a lot of details, yet, but as of this morning Miss Jones’ show is “suspended indefinitely”. I don’t know whether it’s temporary or permanent– I don’t listen to the station, so all I have is what people are talking about online. They might also be playing Jin’s response on the air– that should be interesting.

Pros and cons

If I weren’t paying for medical insurance that I’ll probably never need until the day after I stop paying for it, I would have ordered a pair of Etymotic ER-4’s already.

I’ve been yearning for them for weeks now… How long have I been yearning for medical insurance? I’d use the Etymotics every day. How often will I use the medical insurance? I actually want to use the Etymotics. Who actually wishes for the day that they’ll have to use their medical insurance? The ER-4’s produce “reference-quality” sound. What kind of sound does medical insurance produce?! Sounds of shady con-men and con-women cheering in celebration?

Bottom line:

Etymotics produce great quality sound… I have to sign medical insurance contracts.

Blame Politics…

I really want to share the music of the double A-side (”Politics” & “Disappointed”) from tonedeff’s debut LP, Archetype. You have no idea…

I’m going to be hosting the mp3s of the singles on my server, but we won’t be linking people to them until Monday, January 24th. So check back. I hate to do it, but it’s hard not talking about it– and I thought I’d spare my girlfriend (or any other non-hip hop fan) from having to feign interest. I know there’s got to be at least one hip hop fan reading this. So report back here on Monday.

But for now…
but, buddy I’m flat broke, so on that note
I say goodbye to articles, bookings for college shows,

distribution pushing us hard for dough

then you wonder about why you see the same niggas over and over

the more original the flow, then the colder the shoulder

The same reason you can’t stand that verse you heard

is the same reason you know it word for word– dog, it’s politics

The 12″ vinyl record with the clean version, dirty version, and instrumentals will be released on January 25th.

I wish cross-over was over

I hate to stereotype, but most professional basketball players who try to rap suck massive elephant balls (I use the word “most” because maybe someday I’ll be proven wrong). I refuse to give lame songs any amount of play, so I’m not posting any links to their tracks, but trust me… it’s bad.

There are so many people who try to rap, from athletes to pop singers and they’re just making a joke out of the whole art form.

My views are expressed pretty well in rhyme form in a Tonedeff song called, “TNT”:

Your art is fake, and it’s troubling, yo
There’s kids who think the underground just started with Company Flow

Now we’re stuck with these shows

With 14-year olds and poser herbs

Claiming their emcees,

dropping their fumbled attempts at spoken word

Who don’t deserve the recognition, but they’ll take it

Cause when you had the chance and you didn’t say shit…

You embraced it

Nas - Street's Disciple coverAnyway, rather than make a huge post about how much they suck I thought I’d just point people interested in rap in the right direction: Nas - Street’s Disciple.

I’m actually a little surprised to see the high ratings this album is getting on Amazon (average of 4.5 stars out of 5 with 115 reviews at the time I write this post). Not that I don’t think this 2-disc album is great, but I didn’t think so many other buyers would agree. Maybe there’s still hope for mainstream hip hop!
