To be or not meant to be

Saturday, February 19th, 2005 (3 years, 7 months ago)

So earlier today I was waiting to cross a street when I noticed something on the ground. I wish I brought my damn camera. I don’t know why, but I just had to take a picture of this (No, it’s not a funny picture this time) so I dropped everything I was doing and I walked back to my car and drove back home to get my digital camera.

I drove back to the same spot and luckily it was just as how I’d seen it the first time. Nothing had been disturbed. I took out my camera to take a picture and on the LCD picture preview screen I saw, “Change battery pack.”

I hate you all. It’s too dark now.

With any luck, I’ll hopefully be able to salvage a picture in the early hours of tomorrow after recharging my digital camera battery.

Update: I went back and it was gone. There is no God. Or he just hates me. Either way, my outlook doesn’t seem very good.

No strings attached

I finally got my desktop computer and Apple PowerBook set up to use my new broadband connection (I’m switching from SBC DSL to Comcast Broadband). My download speed averages about four to five times faster than before so I’m happy. (Update: Actually, it’s about seven times faster, now that I actually bother to do the math)

It took a while to get everything working smoothly because with Comcast customer service it’s hit or miss. Half the time I talked to people who might as well be replaced by a well written manual. The other half, I got some helpful information from knowledgeable people…

My PowerBook connects wirelessly to the internet using my Airport Express. I’d like to use this wireless router with my desktop PC, also. I’m really hating the sight of all these wires. So many speaker cables, keyboard cables, mouse cables, etc. I’ve done a good job at making everything wireless with my PowerBook:

  • Apple Bluetooth Keyboard
  • MacAlly Bluetooth Mouse
  • Airport Express with AirTunes (to play iTunes music wirelessly on my 5.1 stereo)

Now if there were only a way to wirelessly charge a laptop battery or power a computer (or anything, really– 90% of my wires are power cords). There must be someone out there who can find a way to wiressly provide electricity to consumer products…

Quintessential quaint quips quandary

Frasier– the epitome of clever/witty television (in my opinion) is gone. Futurama and it’s over-qualified PhD writing staff is gone. I haven’t seen too many episodes, but I got all six seasons of Sex and the CIty on DVD for my girlfriend and have seen a few here and there and it seemed to have witty writing. Coupling (UK) takes many months to put out just a handful of episodes. Where am I supposed to get my dosage of clever television?

I have a lot of respect for the writing on Frasier. Who would have thought that a show about two psychiatrists, their dad, his physical therapist, and a radio producer could be so funny for so long? And they didn’t even have to resort to a mentally stupid character to get easy laughs (Joey on Friends, Matthew on Newsradio, Homer on The Simpsons, etc).

So what are the new, clever, witty shows? Please tell me that there’s at least one new one that’s just been under my radar. Don’t tell me reality shows have taken over the networks…

I’m not saying that there aren’t any good shows left, period. But I do enjoy shows that require you to have more knowledge than that of a pre-teen.

For now, I’ll stick to my Frasier DVDs.

Update: Great, it turns out that Coupling (UK) is not making anymore episodes. There are talks about a Christmas special, but the series is over…

Windows users: don’t try this

A couple of days ago, I had to install a security update on my 1.33Ghz PowerBook and it required me to restart my laptop. I was curious as to how long I had gone without restarting, so I checked:

The-management:~ Chris$ uptime
0:39 up 39 days, 10:08, 2 users, load averages: 0.09 0.10 0.16

My 2.66Ghz PC usually start performing unbearably slow after four days (or even less, sometimes). Another point for the Mac.

A couple of days ago, my GMail account was given fifty invites to send out to people. If anyone is interested in trying out their email service, email me.

It’s definitely the best web-based email service I’ve ever used, if that entices you at all…
