The post poster post

Thursday, June 19th, 2003 (5 years, 5 months ago)

I had originally intended to write this for the old website, but never got around to it, so I decided to complete it and post it now. There, the first part of the title’s explained.

The posters that hang around my room can give a pretty good insight to who I am: I’m a computer geek (Linux penguin poster), who watches The Simpsons (The Simpsons poster), who enjoys rap music (Tupac/Outlawz poster), and in his spare time, watches good movies and produces soap to explode buildings with (Fight Club poster).

I have space for one more, since I just moved out an old book case, and the wall behind it is bare. A poster that has to do with simplicity (especially in design) would work nicely, so if you happen to know of one (that costs around negative five dollars), contact me.

Usability blew: The usability blues

I think the De Anza College website is the worst website that I’ve ever had the misfortune of needing information from.

One of the most annoying things is that their staff directory is a bitch to use (for lack of a better phrase). I search this guy’s name and it says there’s 0 results. Then, I try to search his last name only and I find out that their system lists people with their last name first.

So if you typed John ThisSystemSucks, it wouldn’t list any results, only ThisSystemSucks John would work. And there’s no comma, so it’s just tough luck if a name like RON FUCKINGMO gets flipped around.

You’ve been served

I usually get stuck with some terrible customer service, but I had a rather pleasant experience recently:

I spent about forty-eight hours working my ass off to move all of the files from various websites to another website server in order to beat the deadline so I wouldn’t get billed for another month. Unfortunately, I cut it VERY close, giving the server guys little time before the deadline to format and unplug the machine. So I was billed around $140 for a month of service that I didn’t even get to use, because it was fully unplugged and cancelled a few hours into the next billing cycle.

I figured it was a long shot, but I sent an email to customer service asking if there was anyway to get a refund and I just got an email today saying that since I sent the request in early enough, they already sent in the refund request. Score!

140 Online Fame points to Candace at Rackshack customer service. (And this time, I’m keeping score.)

Without me

I’m finally back on the online journal scene with a new design, new company, new website server, and new posting system. But it’s the same old me.

I’ve actually been quite busy and I probably will remain at the same level of busy-ness for some time. I had this site close to finished weeks ago, but didn’t want to release it until I had gotten on the new web server and had several other websites up and running. I now have eleven dot coms in my name (although I don’t maintain all of them).

To the loyal readers: Thanks for sticking through the three week no-post-a-thon. The old posts have been cleared and comments are now off. Right now, I think I’d like to name the person who I mentioned the most on the older version of the site: Annie Tao. I said her name over twenty times in various posts (plus one, if you include this post). I’ll make sure to give her some sort of shanty home-made prize.

And I’ll go out on this note: I’ve been doin’ this, believe, it’s nothin’ new: This design is old to me, but it’s new to you. 10 points for whoever knows what song I’m mimicing…
